Final Scaled Model






When it came to build the scale pavilion structure itself more thought and research was undertaken to find materials that would bend easily, my first idea was to use acrylic but in my research I encountered a method that uses Heated PVC pipes to create bends and uneven angles. Testing this material proved to be very easy as the pipes are readily found and after selecting the two sizes needed according to my scale which was 1:32 the exact angles were cut using the mitre saw. I focused on the finish mostly and the pipes were finished in water soluble sandpaper to create a dull flat finish and another advantage I had was that they were the exact colours I had in mind for my end pavilion hence they did not have to be sprayed. The cost of the PVC pipes was only 6.75 euros.

The biggest problem encountered was when I came to construct the surrounding border feature, In this case I used balsa wood that was steam bent to create the desired angle. Despite our lectures advice not to use super glue, I had to use it as the wood pieces would not simply stick to the pipes, the end result was not as clean as I wanted it but I was the only way that I could create this feature. To try and solve this problem the wood was coated which a matt clear varnish to try and remove to wood stains resulted by the super glue.

The final model was constructed along two weeks the first few days was working in conjunction with the other unit to create the landscaping plans and detailed drawings to ultimately come up with a suitable scale for the model. These three days were followed by a week of construction phase were all the necessary items were bought and cut into the desires angles and sizes according to the working plans created. The last few days were spent mounting the items together and finishing off the model to create the final model.

The final cost mounted to around 75 euros, in my opinion the end result was clean and nicely finished although items like landscaping and lighting could have been added to make the model more interesting. After my first review date my lecturer pointed out that a human scale would have been sufficient to add a more realistic scale value to the model hence the scaled person was added to the model.

Chosen Pavilion Concept Chart



In this chart I focused more on detailing the structure giving a clear idea how the pavilion would be made ,the sight location chosen and the surrounding landscaping ,Features like lighting and shadows and most of all how the structure would look as a final finished pavilion.



How will the pavilion be made
A structure made out of timber in various sections that are nailed together and cladded to form the base of the pavilion frame. The frame would be cladded with plywood and covered in a cement finish to make the round finished face and make the pavilion water proof. The frame would be mounted to the floor using 8mm stainless steal bolts and the seating area would be made out of square section steal to provide adequate strength when a number of people are sitting on it . Sand based paint would be used to give color and also to add texture to the pavilion’s outer shell while on the inside flat paint would be used to embrace the shadow being created.

Lighting and Shadows
In this pavilion my concept was to embrace light and shadow effects as the main vital component in the structure’s design, The pavilion is designed in a way to evolve during the day changing its inner shadow pattern hence the pavilion is seen differently every time you look at it and even the particular season you would be currently in.
The surrounding border at the top part of the pavilion is there not only to create these shadows but also to be a place to mount the lighting system therefore creating a relationship between night and day and how shadow evolves into light at night.

Lighting Layout
The lighting will be one of the main features of the pavilion and I chose to use  LED rope light, This was because rope light could easily bend around the curve and will provide a continues light beam . Another option would be to use energy efficient lighting tubes that would be placed in every part of the border . This lighting layout would be ideal for an exhibition space so charts of students could be displayed on the white curved wall.

In the three models I choose to use different materials and techniques that would ultimately help me to develop a preferred material that would be used for my final model.
The three models took around 1 week to complete using time to further develop my concept ideas to solve problems that would be influential in the structures development and functionality. As the models were made from paper, mount board and cardboard the cost to produce was minimal and the total sum up cost was not more than 5 euros for the three models.
 The models could have been made out of wood, acrylic, and even foam board but not only the cost but also the end result would have been different. The materials chosen for the construction of the 3 models provided flexibility as well as medium to freely express what I had in mind. Some difficulties I found, was how to give strength to a paper which was folded and bended in irregular angles and after some research was undertaken I chose to cover the model in tissue paper which was soaked in PVA glue.

Concept chart Studio Set Design



This chart represents the work being done to propose a concept design for a TV set design,The chart shows how the studio would look in different camera angles used in studio production and particular attention was given to having all camera angles look exciting and reflect the youth program theme given.

This design was inspired from the game of cross word and the pixels created by a computer. When we were assigned with the task of designing a set that would reflect youth culture ,I wanted to create a fun yet contemporary looking design that would embrace art, music and youth culture as the main vital component  of the sets design.

Light and music will form a theme in the set's design ,having a place to perform while still being a composition that is not usually seen in performance platforms. Different levels would reflect different members of the band as well as serve as a place for artists to display and portray their own work. A monitor would also be used to show the latest band videos and graphic design students works and portfolio, hence a seating area was dedicated for interviews and event promotion.

Concept chart


In this part of the assignment we presented a concept board that would show the concepts being proposed for the pavilion seating structure.The chart also included the area being proposed and how the location would be a benefit to such a structure.Particular attention was given to how the pavilion would look on site and how distinctive attributes  of light and shadow could make  the pavilion structure more interesting and dynamic.

Pavilion 3
In this pavilion I was inspired by a sea shell and how the shape provides an organic feel with ribs that make the shell full of texture and tactile qualities. In this structure I wanted to make people walk around and into the pavilion and inside the cabin you would find the seating  and the vital component in the pavilions design. The surrounding walls would be made out of sectioned plywood and the structure would be covered with cement that would leave a rough feel .The contrast between wall colours, texture ,shadows and light would in my opinion create a modern piece that embraces both design and architecture.

Pavilion 2





Pavilion 2
This pavilion was inspired from a number of test pieces I have done using paper folds as well as how structures such as tents hold up using tensioned cable. The pavilion created an illusion like effect of wind as it takes a very free flowing shape that seems to define gravity. The structure would be made out of pvc pipes that are heated and bended to create the dynamic shape being proposed. The seating invites people to sit in various different positions and light would create a nice feature in the exhibitions nights hence a nice effect of light would be reflected between the pipes.
